[Korea IT News] Increase system semiconductor design support center by 5 times (Nov 11, 2021)

Increase system semiconductor design support center by 5 times

Expanding to 200 pyeong to 1,000 pyeong
Up to 25 companies will have room to move in
Expand funding and link funds
Reinforce training of system semiconductor design personnel

2023년 시스템반도체설계지원센터가 들어설 판교 제 2테크노밸리 글로벌 비즈센터"Pangyo 2nd Techno Valley Global Biz Center, where System Semiconductor Design Support Center will be built in 2023"

System semiconductor design support center that supports semiconductor start-ups and ventures is going to increase size by 5 times. It is going to increase amount of support for system semiconductor start-ups and contribute to strengthening competitive edge in industries.

System Semiconductor Design Support Center is planning to open in February 2023 and will expand its center to 1,000-pyeong (1pyeong=3.305785m2) in the Global Biz Center in Pangyo 2nd Techno Valley. The size is five times larger than the current 200-pyeong center. By increasing the number of semiconductor businesses that are currently supporting about 15 or so, Samsung Electronics is going to secure space that can accommodate up to 25 semiconductor businesses. It is expected that Samsung Electronics will establish itself as a home for various semiconductor start-ups and venture businesses.

The center, which opened in June last year, serves as a "cradle" for Korea to become a system semiconductor powerhouse. It is giving up office space for semiconductor fabless and IP (Intellectual Property) businesses to grow, and helping them verify semiconductor design implementation, support design automation (EDA) tools, measure, and produce prototypes. Not only is it going to support not only development of system semiconductors but it also supports investment and marketing activities that are linked to semiconductor growth funds and system semiconductor win-win funds.

Last year, 10 semiconductor companies such as Openedge, UX Factory, and Mobilint moved into the center or received support. This year, six additional companies including Rebellions, Solidview, and Quantas Semiconductor were selected. Rebellions is the first South Korean fabless company to develop artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors by utilizing Samsung Electronics' 5-nano process. If the center is expanded in the next year, the number of successful fabless cases is expected to increase.

The center is also focusing on training professionals recently. Companies that support semiconductor design such as AD Technology, GAONCHIPS, and CoAsia, and Sungkyunkwan University will provide specialized education on semiconductor design for employment-linked systems. It is also working hard to strengthen the competence of incumbent employees of system semiconductor design companies by operating training courses that utilize EDA tools for incumbent employees.

The center is planning to support variety of 'semiconductor stars' by broadening the scope of support for semiconductor ventures and start-ups. Not only fabless businesses but also semiconductor-related businesses such as IP and devices will be discovered and supported. It is going to make it easier for fabless businesses to use core IPs at home and abroad, and also strengthen MPW (Multi-Project Wafer) business in cooperation with domestic foundry. MPW implements many businesses or products in one wafer and is a process for R&D and is essential for producing prototypes of early companies such as semiconductor ventures and startups.

"Our goal is to establish an eco-system where the system semiconductor industry can grow," said Kim Hwi-won, head of the System Semiconductor Design Support Center. "By expanding the center, various early semiconductor companies will be able to benefit from growth."
