Semiconductor is now at the core of the nation's competitiveness. Major countries are competitively pushing for government-led plans to strengthen their semiconductor capabilities. Among them, Korea, the top country in the industry, is keen to strengthen its semiconductor competitiveness by promoting communication in various ways. In this sense, the 23rd Semiconductor Competition, which was held at COEX in Seoul from October 27 to 29, was an event to confirm the public's keen interest in semiconductors.

South Korea's latest semiconductor technology network

The 23rd Semiconductor Competition (SEDEX 2021) was held under the auspices of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the industry leaders, hosted and supervised by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association. A total of 237 domestic semiconductor-related companies participated in the fair, demonstrating their respective semiconductor-related technology at 600 booths. Companies from almost all industries related to semiconductors, including optical equipment, micro-measuring equipment, auto parts, solar power generation and analytical devices, participated in the event.

Despite concerns over the spread of the Corona 19, the fair attracted a large crowd of industry officials, general visitors and college students interested in finding jobs in the semiconductor industry. The booth of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix drew the most attention at the event.

Samsung Electronics introduced semiconductors that reflect its latest technologies such as V-NAND SSD 980 PRO, ISOCELL HP1, mobile AP Exynos W920, mobile DRAM LPDDR5, and 14-nano EUV DDR5 DRAM RDIMMM, which announced plans to mass-produce them on the 12th. In addition to the semiconductor exhibition, various events were held at Samsung Electronics' booth, attracting visitors' attention. An event was also held to present Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4, and Galaxy Buzz to visitors who solve missions that can be seen by scanning QR codes displayed throughout the booth.

In addition, Samsung Electronics also held 'SAMSUNG Insight Talk' where industry experts can listen to the diagnosis and insight of semiconductor industries. During the three-day event, experts such as Park Chul-min, executive director of Samsung Electronics' D/C Platform Group, Kang Moon-soo, executive director of Samsung Electronics' Make Strategy Team, and Lim Chang-hwan, a brain engineer at Hanyang University, gave lectures on their respective fields of memory semiconductor, foundry, system semiconductor, and artificial intelligence.

SK Hynix introduced its flagship memory semiconductors. SK Hynix displayed its latest DRAM and SSD products that can be applied to five technology fields such as self-driving cars, meta-bus, big data, artificial intelligence, and 6G network. On top of that, SK Hynix introduced its process in detail that emphasizes green technology tailored to the direction of ESG that SK Group is practicing throughout the company. SK Hynix's booth received a lot of attention as it was fun for those who gathered at the event. It caught the attention of the field by operating electronic entertainment games based on memory semiconductors and a game event featuring 1TB of Gold P31 SSD products as a prize.

In addition, many promising semiconductor-related companies participated in the fair. Semiconductor equipment and systems company Wonik IPS, semiconductor equipment and parts company Ram Research Korea, design solution partner company GAONCHIPS, CoAsia, smart factory solution company Shinsung Eng, and precision measuring equipment company KEYENCE, and OLYMPUS participated to introduce the latest technologies and products of each company.

a venue for human networks

Along with semiconductor-related companies, a large number of science and engineering college students visited the site to explore the future of the semiconductor industry. Seoul National University's System Semiconductor Industry Promotion Center (SISP) introduced programs that support semiconductor talent development, industry-academic cooperation, mentoring, and start-up with Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Students majoring in semiconductors and materials from Korea University, Chung-Ang University, Kyung Hee University, Seoul National University, and Kookmin University visited the site to consult with their professors and listen to explanations about the domestic semiconductor industry.

Choi Ki-chang, an industry-academic cooperation professor at the SISP business group, encouraged students who gathered at the site, saying, "Because the semiconductor industry needs a lot of talent, you will be able to meet many good opportunities if you want to find it," and added, "If you proudly ask many companies at the fair to experience the industry, you will definitely get a good opportunity."

Kim Jung-min (a pseudonym), a sophomore majoring in new materials engineering at Kookmin University, said, "I heard that there are many companies looking for workers as interest in the semiconductor industry increases," and added, "I visited the fair to explore my career in the semiconductor field."

Kang Jae-yeon (a pseudonym), a student at Kyung Hee University, said, "I was surprised that there were more semiconductor-related companies than I thought. It was good to get various information on the current status, business conditions, and career path of the semiconductor industry."
